Department of English

Introduction to The Department of English

English has been teaching in Arts, Commerce and Science College since its inception in 1991. The Department has been offering instruction for the award of the degrees of B. A. (since 1992). One of the major responsibilities of the department is the “General English” course. Undergraduate courses in all subjects, whether science, commerce or arts, include two compulsory English papers, one in the first year and the next in the second and final year of the degree programme. The department also offers special “bridge” courses and Spoken English as well as Communicative English Programmes from time to time.

The main strength of the department is the bilingual (in some cases multi-lingual) competence of the members of the faculty. Translation include not only English translations in Marathi but also translations into Hindi.

The Department of English at our college provides students with an excellent education in the liberal arts—one that strikes an ideal balance between creativity and critical inquiry. Undergraduate students, whether planning to enter professional or academic job markets after graduation, leave with skills allowing them to communicate, collaborate, and problem solve in a cultural landscape growing increasingly global.

Objectives of Department of English:

The objectives of the Department of English are closely related to those of the University a whole, but also reflect the special nature of our discipline and our commitment to literature, language, and the arts. Our commitment to the quality of education that we offer is reflected in our determination to maintain a relatively low student/teacher ratio and to give our students the benefit of direct contact with scholars in the field.

Our Goals:

Our goal in teaching are to enable our students to read well, to write well, and to think well, and to provide them with appropriate knowledge in the discipline of English language and literature.
More specifically, we aim to graduate students who have:

The reading skills to examine literature from multiple eras, cultures, and genres with critical understanding;
The ability to express themselves clearly and comprehensively, orally and in writing;
Research skills which enable them to expand, from a variety of perspectives, their own readings of literature and understanding of language;

An appropriate knowledge of relevant fields within the discipline, including literature; literary history, criticism, and theory;
The language structures of modern English and the history of the English language;
An enhanced appreciation and enjoyment of literature and language.

Mission Statement for Department of English

The overall mission of the English Department is to promote literacy--specifically the ability to read, write, and think critically. This mission includes the fostering of such technological literacy as information retrieval, research, and communication. Literate individuals can gather, analyse, and communicate information effectively as well as think creatively and draw independent conclusions. The Department fosters these goals through scholarship and instruction in all areas of literatures written in English and in the production and reception of a variety of texts, including academic, professional, and creative writing.
